Tetris Wouldn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category Might Solve This

Whenever a prominent honors show draws close, there’s always a demand to include of new categories to honor underappreciated efforts and delight the spirits of fans who have specialized interests.

A fellow writer has already made for a horror game category. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are board games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front just as with other blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request is the most urgent and important of all. Here's the proposal: We need an award type for logic-based games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and typically generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise for the industry of gaming, which are so diverse they barely qualify as a single art form.

For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies offer these genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these six categories effectively encompass numerous genres, making space possible for numerous titles.

This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, all very different: building puzzles in a particular game, intense tile-matching of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. Which classification works within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens outstanding logic titles launched regularly that have no home in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked completely that year
  • Another creative title was excluded that year
  • Popular arranging title got ignored that year
  • Limited numbers of puzzle games barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often small games, yet the craft in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles stand as most popular titles globally maintaining this status for many years.

The famous puzzle experience rivals famous sandbox experiences competing to become highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, while interacting with almost every other genre.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. It would be easy to populate five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.

Restating the point, these include experiences that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators operate at the demanding boundary of video game design, developing some of essential manifestations of the video game form. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
